<abstract>Jack Hyett was a primary school teacher for 26 years, then a lecturer at Burwood Teachers College until his retirement. He also lectured on natural history on both radio and television.</abstract>
<p>Born Sebastopol, Victoria, 11 July 1915. Died 21 July 2001. Educated Melbourne Teachers College (Trained Primary Teacher's Certificate 1936). Taught mainly in one-teacher rural schools ca 1937-56; teacher in Melbourne schools 1957-62; seconded to Burwood Teachers College 1963 to lecture in Nature Study; lecturer in the Science Department from when it became a State College until his retirement in 1976. Honorary Life Member, Ringwood Field Naturalists Club 1971; Honorary Life member, Field Ornithology Group of Sri Lanka 1980; Australian Natural History Medallion 1985. Foundation President, Victorian Ornithological Research Group and Ringwood Field Naturalists Club. Editor, <span style="font-style:italic">The Emu</span>, 1965-68. Lectured extensively on natural history, including on radio and television. Led natural history tours overseas and in Australia. Established Bird Observers' Club Historic Photograph Collection 1963 and was its first custodian. His nom-de-plume was 'Pedionomus'.</p>
