<abstract>William Emison was in charge of a unit conducting wildlife surveys on crown lands, Victorian Department of Fisheries and Wildlife 1973-1994, developing a database of over 2 million records as a basis for the <span style="font-style:italic">Atlas of Victorian Wildlife</span>,</abstract>
<p>Born Boise, Idaho 1939. Died Melbourne, 15 December 1999. Educated University of Montana (BSc 1962) and Johns Hopkins University (MSc 1967). Study of introduced trout, Department of Internal Affairs, New Zealand; research on the diet of Adélie penguins, Antarctica; work on the Whistling Swan; studies in the Aleutian Islands; NSW Department of the Environment 1972; in charge of a unit conducting wildlife surveys on crown lands, Victorian Department of Fisheries and Wildlife 1973-94, developing a database of over 2 million records as a basis for the <span style="font-style:italic">Atlas of Victorian Wildlife</span>, which included the <span style="font-style:italic">Atlas of Victorian Birds</span> (Emison et al. 1987). He also undertook species-specific studies, including the Peregrine Falcon.</p>
