<abstract>John Bleasdale was a Roman Catholic clergyman interested in science and was President of the Royal Society of Victoria, 1865. He was active in a number of government and public committees related to schools, technical education (particularly in chemistry and mineralogy) and museums, and the Melbourne Public Library and Gallery. Between 1857 and 1873 he was a member of the Exploration Committee of the Philosophical Institute of Victoria (later Royal Society of Victoria). He was a foundation Member of the Melbourne Microscopical Society, Honorary Member of the Medical Society of Victoria, and Fellow of the Geographical and Linnean Societies, London.</abstract>
