John Dennant was Inspector of Schools in Victoria from 1890, President of the Royal Society of Victoria (1903) and a Fellow of the Geological Society of London. He prepared a report on the <span style="font-style:italic">"Estimation of Alkalies in Igneous Rocks"</span> for the Second Meeting of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science (1890), and he presented many papers to the Royal Society of Victoria. He arrived in Australia (Victoria) in 1872 and was a school headmaster from 1879.

His large collection of Victorian fossils, containing almost all known tertiary fossils species at the time, was bought by the National Museum in December 1907.
