He was keenly interested in avian taxonomy and nomenclature and in the protection of native birds. He was editor of the Royal Australian Ornithologists Union journal, The Emu, 1929-1960 and was very successful at raising funds to keep its production costs down. Having been educated at the University of Melbourne and been admitted to the Victorian Bar in 1929, he was a partner in the legal firm of Moule, Hamilton and Derham at the time of his death.
