<abstract>Nigel Gray was director of the Anti-Cancer Council of Victoria 1968-1995. He was instrumental in getting warnings on cigarette packets and bans on tobacco advertising. During his term as chairman, the council initiated the "Slip, Slop, Slap" campaign against skin cancer, pap test screening for cervical cancer and breast cancer screening.</abstract>
<p>Born Melbourne, 12 September 1928. AM 1978, AO 1994. Educated University of Melbourne (MB, BS). DHA Fellow, Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, Melbourne 1957, Research Fellow in Paediatrics, West Reserve University, USA and Royal Melbourne Hospital Cleveland Fellowship 1959-60, Deputy Superintendent, Fairfield Infectious Diseases Hospital 1961-64, Assistant Medical Director, Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne 1964-68, Director, Anti-Cancer Council of Victoria 1968-95. Chairman, UICC Program on Smoking and Cancer 1975-90, Chairman, International Agency for Research on Cancer Scientific Council 1983-84, President, International Union Against Cancer 1994-98.</p>
