<abstract>Oscar Mendelsohn set up as an analytical and consulting chemist during the 1920s. Later he bought a grazing property which he farmed for 12 years before selling it to the government as a research station and returning to the city. He was also an author and composer of light music, the latter under the name of Oscar Milsen.</abstract>
<p>Born Nanango, Queensland, 12 July 1896. Died 5 January 1978. OBE 1975. Educated Sydney Technical College, University of Melbourne (BSc) and North-western University, Chicago. Junior, customs agent's office, shift chemist, Lithgow Steel works, teacher at a small private school, AIF Artillery 1914-18, University of Melbourne 1919-21, analytical and consulting chemical business ca 1922-31, chemical adviser to the RAAF (Squadron Leader) 1942-45, grazing property, Lara, ca 1946-58, sold property to the government as a research station and returned to the city, consultant in disputed documents. Australian representative, World's Dairy Congress, London 1928.</p>

<abstract>Includes: literary and music manuscripts, correspondence, reviews, broadcasts, records of associations, publications, photographs and newspaper cuttings. Among the manuscripts are drafts of A waltz with Matilda, My laughing stock, Salute to onions, Along the eastern wall, Guide to Australian wine and spirits, From cellar to kitchen and Questioned documents and outrageous liars. Correspondents include: Max Meldrum, Percy Leason, W.A. Osborne, G. Hermon Gill, Clem Semmler, Owen Sperling, Geri Ettinger and Roland Thorp. There is a good deal of correspondence, reports and publications of the Australian Consumers' Association (1962-1973) and also files on the Unitarian Assembly of Victoria, Melbourne Unitarian Peace Memorial Church, Australian Pure Food Society, Fellowship of Epicures and the Wine and Food Society.</abstract>
