<biogHist>
<abstract>George Israel was a lecturer, then senior lecturer in chemistry at the University of Tasmania from 1938 to 1949. He was also President of the Tasmanian Branch of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute 1947. After leaving Tasmania, he took up a senior academic chemistry position at the University of Hong Kong, followed by posts as Professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of Ghana; Professor at University College in London; and in the Chemistry Department of the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology in Cardiff till 1976. Before coming to Australia Israel completed at Bachelor and Master of Science (BSc, MSc) at the University of Otago.</abstract>
