He joined the Queensland Government Chemical Laboratory as a Cadet in 1912 and was appointed Deputy Government Analyst in 1946. By 1961 when he retired he was Deputy Director. From 1917 to 1918 Hurwood worked on explosives production in England and spent several years in charge of chemical work associated with oil exploration in Queensland. He distilled the first samples of oil found in Australia at Roma in 1927 and was also associated with the initial work on eradication of prickly pear and on blowfly strike in sheep. After completing studies at the Brisbane Central Technical College, he went on to complete a Bachelor of Science (BSc) at the University of Queensland. Hurwood, Alan Spence (1895-1962)
