He was the first to chemically investigate the fungicides in the paint film and developed many paint formulations for use in moist interior and exterior locations varying from Housing Commission kitchens to claddings for housing in Papua New Guinea. Prior to joining CSIRO he worked as a Research Chemist for Timbrol Ltd. CSIRO Division of Building Research [I], Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (1950 - 1971)
