Richard Gillis worked at the Munitions Supply Laboratories during the second World War, where he was involved in chemical warfare trials in northern Queensland (1944). Once the war finished, he became a lecturer in organic chemistry at the Melbourne Technical College and remained there for ten years. During this time, Gillis completed a Master of Science at the University of Melbourne. He then went to the University of Notre Dame in America to complete a PhD on the infra-red spectroscopy of sulfur compounds. Gillis returned to Melbourne and joined the Defence Standards Laboratory, was soon promoted to senior research scientist and remained there until 1980. For three years during the 1970s, he was the Department of Defence representative at the Australian Embassy in Washington, USA. Although officially retired in 1980, he accepted an Honorary Associateship from the School of Chemistry at the University of Melbourne and continued his research and assisted graduate students. Richard Gillis was appointed Honorary Fellow of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute where he was editor of its Proceedings during the 1960s.
