He was a Chief Research Scientist there from 1968 and was particularly interested in crystallography. Dawson joined the CSIRO after completing his studies at the universities of Melbourne (BSc, MSc) and Cambridge (PhD). In 1968 he received the Research Medal from the Royal Society of Victoria.
