George Cook worked for the Institute of Science and Industry (later CSIR/O) from1922 to 1952 where he occupied a number of positions. After completing his studies (Bachelor of Mining Engineering, MSc) at the University of Melbourne, Cook was enlisted to the 2nd Australian Tunnellers during World War I and was later awarded a Military Cross (MC). After the war he worked with Sir Edgeworth David collating geological information from the French and Belgian geological surveys, then once back in Australia he researched several phases of the mining and metals industries. In 1922 he joined the Institute of Science and Industry where he progressed through the ranks from Scientific Abstractor to Assistant Secretary, Officer-in-Charge of the Information Service, and finally Secretary (1944-1952). During his time at the Institute it changed names firstly to the CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) and then to the CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation).
