In 1952 he was seconded to the UK where he studied for a PhD in UK and gained experience of British defence research establishments. Upon his return to Australia Cook carried out chemical testing in support of missile testing trials in Woomera for the Propulsion Research Laboratory. In 1955 he undertook combustion research related to rocket propulsion and pioneered the introduction in Australia of flash photolysis and shock tube techniques for the study of fast gas phase reactions.
