He then lectured at the School of Nursing (University of Melbourne?), was a guide for secondary students at the Maritime Museum, was involved in the Chemistry Olympiad (Summer School) and was both a student and lecturer at the University of the Third Age. Before joining Deakin University, Clarke was an instructor in chemistry then senior lecturer in physical chemistry at Gordon Institute of Technology in Geelong. After completing his studies at the University of Melbourne, Clarke worked in a local knitting factory where he gained his Boiler Attendant's qualification and was in charge of production and erection of signs.
