Analytical chemist
M. B. Challen was chemist-in-charge of the laboratory at the West Melbourne works of the Metropolitan Gas Company from 1917 until his retirement in 1938. He then carried out investigatory work on refractory materials for the National Gas Association. Prior to this he was an Instructor at the Daylesford School of Mines.
