His early research was on renal function, later shifting to salivary glands and the pancreas. In 1967 he joined the University of Sydney as Senior Lecturer in Physiology, ultimately becoming Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Health Sciences). Over the next 30 years his research partners included University colleagues David Cook and Ernest van Lennep. Young was active in medical research organisations and as a consultant to a number of Sydney hospitals.
