Henry Woodward was government geologist for Western Australia 1888-1895, a government consultant for some years and finally assistant government geologist from April 1905. His annual report for 1890, republished as "Mining handbook to the colony of Western Australia" (1894), was essential reading for miners and prospectors. He persuaded the government to sink its first artesian bore at Guildford in 1894. Woodward was also a local partner and manager of mining and consulting business on the eastern goldfields for Bewick, Moreing & Co. of London and Coolgardie. He worked as a mining engineer in his own business from 1897.
