James Wilson and his partner P.J.C. McDouall founded a Hereford stud in 1919 and a Poll Hereford stud in 1936. He was an executive member of the United Graziers' Association for 27 years and chaired its cattle committee, which opposed the introduction into Queensland of tropical Zebu cattle by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research in 1933. Wilson was also Calliope Shire councillor for over 20 years and president of the Gladstone Show Society. He was educated at Hawkesbury Agricultural College in Richmond, New South Wales.
