His P6 class passenger locomotives, introduced in 1892, became world famous and were used on the trans-continental railway when it was completed in 1917. Initially Thow worked under his father on the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway and was a pupil of Alexander Allan on the Scottish Central Railway.
