<abstract>Edward Slater was born and educated in Australia, although he spent the greater part of his working life in the Netherlands. There he was Professor of Physiological Chemistry and Director of the Laboratory of Physiological Chemistry (later called the Laboratory of Biochemistry) at the University of Amsterdam from 1955-1985. He is interested in the area of bioenergetics, in particular the metabolism of mitochondria.</abstract>
