Prior to this he was Assistant Director of Research and Henry Head Research Fellow in A.V. Hill's research unit at the University. Katz was particularly interested in the physico-chemical mechanism of neuromuscular transmission, for which he was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1970. He held several other positions before joining University College, including a stint in J.C.
