<abstract>Alfred Tanner was a livestock expert who specialised in beef cattle. He helped to found studs in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria and to establish stud cattle sales in the Northern Territory at Brunette Downs in 1953 and in Queensland at Cloncurry in 1954.</abstract>
<p>Born 9 May 1887. Died 21 May 1955. Worked with his family's Herefords until 1913, came to Australia 1913 with a shipment of Lincoln and Shropshire sheep, sheep-breeder and dealer, County of Cumberland, George and Henry Badgery's stud-stock auctioneering firm until ca 1927, Goldsbrough, Mort &amp; Co. Ltd (who took over Badgery's) 1927-31, manager, stock department, Commonwealth Wool &amp; Produce Co. Ltd from 1932, stud-stock expert, Dalgety &amp; Co. Ltd 1949-54. Judged at shows in New Zealand and Australia and in 1949 judged the Hereford section at the Royal Agricultural Society's show at Shrewsbury, England. Helped to found studs at Milton Park (NSW), Richmond (NSW), Warwick (Qld) and Shelford (Vic). Council member, Royal Agricultural Society of New South Wales from 1932.</p>
