In the 1940s he was contracted by the CSIR Division of Plant Industry to conduct a pharmacological survey of Queensland plants. The aim of the survey was to identify plants containing alkaloid-like compounds with a view to investigating their medical potential. In 1940 Shaw joined the Department of Physiology at the University of Melbourne as Lecturer in Pharmacology.
