Educated in chemistry at Ballarat School of Mines, University of Melbourne, Bennett Perry went on to a stellar career in agricultural chemistry. He worked in both Victoria and Western Australia and helped establish the Chemical Industry of Victoria. Perry acted as the body's Honorary Secretary for several years. In 1900 he was appointed Chief Chemist at the Australian Explosive and Chemical Company and then Manager in 1905. In 1909 he joined Cuming Smith & Co. Pty. Ltd in Melbourne and was moved to Western Australia the following year to supervise the construction of the new sulphuric acid and superphosphorate works. Bennett Perry officiated the opening of the works in 1911 and went on to mange the site until 1933.

During his time in Western Australia, Perry and the Department of Agriculture initiated many large scale pasturing experiments. He also held numerous prominent positions including Chairman of the Western Australian State Committee of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. When Bennett Perry moved back to Melbourne in 1933 he was appointed a member of the Victorian wing of the above Committee. He also took over as General Manager of Commonwealth Fertilisers and Chemicals Limited. A position he held until 1943.
