He was noted for his study of major histocompatibility antigens' role in immune recognition, particularly in virus-infected cells. He was awarded the 1996 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, jointly with Rolf Zinkernagel, for their discoveries concerning the specificity of the cell mediated immune defence.
