Initially he worked in the design office in Melbourne, then in chemical engineering control in Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales (Villawood). He was next employed by Ajax Chemical Company as there chief chemist, then become the companies manager. In 1950 Adams joined the Sydney Metropolitan Water Sewerage and Drainage Board as chief chemist and moved through the ranks to become Principal Chemist in charge of the Chemical and Bacteriological Section.
