He was a pioneer in techniques to prevent patients getting blood clots during surgery. After completing his undergraduate studies, Rosengarten eventually travelled overseas for further training. During this time he spent three months on the Alfred Hospital Australian Civil Surgical Team at Ben Hoa in Vietnam and three years at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School Hospital in Hammersmith. Upon his return to Australia, Rosengarten worked as assistant general-surgeon at the Alfred Hospital and lecturer of surgery at Monash University.
