Robert Pulleine was a consultant physician specialising in diseases of the eye, ear, nose and throat. He practised in Adelaide and was part-owner of the Walwa Hospital. Pulleine was a keen naturalist and something of a polymath, being interested in botany, anthropology, marine biology, history and entomology. He was particularly interested in spiders and made a special study of trapdoor spiders. His discoveries included three new shells, including <span style="font-style:italic">Chlamys pulleineanus</span>. Six other species of animals and plants were named for him including <span style="font-style:italic">Carpobrotus pulleinei</span> (Aizoaceae). Pulleine was an enthusiastic participant in scientific organisations in South Australia, being president of a number of them including the Royal Society of South Australia and the Anthropological Society of South Australia. He was an inaugural Member of the Board of Anthropological Research and participated in four of the Board's annual field expeditions.
