Ken Otway was first joined the School of Chemistry at the University of Melbourne in 1945 as a technician in charge of the maintenance of the first and second year laboratory preparation rooms. When he retired in 1985 he had progressed to the rank of Chief Technical Officer. Otway was also Treasurer of the Melbourne University Staff Association (1958-1974) and a member of the University Council (1981-1985). He was Founding Director of the Credit Union in 1972 and remained on the Board until 1990, with service as Chair and Deputy Chair for 14 years.
