<biogHist>
<abstract>Captain Gother Mann was the first Chief Commissioner for Railways in New South Wales from 1855 to 1857, and as consulting engineer superintended the construction of Fitzroy Dock 1851 to 1857. From 1857 until his retirement in 1870, he was Engineer-in-Chief for Civil engineering, Dry Docks and Fitzroy Dock, within the Department of Lands and Public Works.</abstract>
<p>Came to Sydney in 1836. When the Sydney Railway Company was taken over by the Government in 1855, he became Chief Commissioner for Railways, a position he held until July 1857. He was engaged subsequently in the construction of the Fitzroy Dry Dock at Cockatoo Island.</p>
