<biogHist>
<abstract>Alexander Jessep was director of the Melbourne Botanic Gardens and Government Botanist of Victoria 1941-1957. He was formerly Principal of Burnley Horticultural College, Melbourne 1926-1941. Jessep studied at the University of Melbourne and Marshall College, Scotland (MAgrSc, BSc, Dip Ed) and served with the 1st Australian Imperial Force. Jessep was particularly interested in roses and camellias, and was President of the National Rose Society of Victoria and the Australian Camellia Research Society. For many years he wrote camellia notes for the magazine <span style="font-style:italic">Garden lover</span>.</abstract>
