<abstract>William Hobbs arrived in Australia on board the migrant ship <span style="font-style:italic">Chasely</span> where he was employed as the ship's surgeon. He soon set up a private medical practise in Brisbane (1849-1888) and was Health Officer for Brisbane from 1854 to 1888. Hobbs was the first to administer the chloroform anaesthetic in Brisbane in 1854. He was involved in many medical bodies in Queensland and carried out research on the medicinal qualities of dugong oil, of which he became an advocate.</abstract>
