Ernest Henry was a mineral prospector who discovered copper at Cloncurry (the Great Australian Copper Mine) in 1867 and Argylla and Mount Oxide in 1882.
<p>Arrived in Melbourne 1858 and took up pastoral runs in Queensland 1859-65. In 1863 he explored the Flinders country with Hugh Devlin; this exploration resulted in his occupation of Hughenden station and the later development of the town of Hughenden. Began mineral prospecting in 1866 and in 1867 discovered copper on the Cloncurry River, which was later known as the Great Australian Copper Mine. Worked it till 1879, then sold it. In 1882 he discovered copper mines at Argylla (50 miles west of Cloncurry) and Mount Oxide (90 miles from Argylla) and held these interests until 1913.</p>
