He is widely known for hs work on a vaccine against hepatitis A. For 20 years he was Medical Virologist at the Fairfield Infectious Diseases Hospital and from 1885 to 1991 Director of the Macfarlane Burnet Centre for Medical Research. From there he went on to become Director of Research and Development at CSL Ltd. Gust has contributed significantly to advisory bodies in Australia and overseas, including as Commonwealth Chief Medical and Scientific Adviser on AIDS and Director of the National Hepatitis Reference Centre, and to a number of WHO committees on viruses and hepatitis.
