John Gowlland surveyed the New South Wales coast 1865-1874.
<p>John Thomas Ewing Gowlland joined the navy in 1853 and served in the Crimean war. Later he assisted with survey work in Chincha Islands off Peru and Vancouver Island and Straits to determine the northern boundary of the USA. He also carried out surveys in the Mediterranean. In 1865 Gowlland was appointed to the Australian survey as chief assistant and when Captain Sydney retired took command of the survey of the New South Wales coast. He also commanded a relief expedition in 1872 to search for the brig "Maria" and rescued 34 survivors. In 1873 he moved to England as a Staff Commander. After returning to Sydney Gowlland drowned in an accident while surveying Middle Harbour.</p>
