He worked particularly on band structure calculations for nickel, iron, manganese, rhodium, gold, and complex alloys. He migrated to Australia in 1957, after a distinguished career at Exeter University College, to become Senior Lecturer in applied mathematics at the University of Sydney. Here he developed close ties with CSIRO physicists at the National Measurement Laboratory, situated on campus. In 1965 he moved to Monash University. After retiring in 1983 he continued his research in association with CSIRO colleagues at Clayton. To mark Fletcher's 70th birthday, a meeting was held in 1992 was held at Monash, the papers subsequently being published as a Festschrift. 1941 1945?
