Richard Eades ran a private medical practice in Adelaide from 1849 to 1852 and in Melbourne from 1852 to 1867. He was also physician to the Melbourne Hospital (1859-1866), lectured on materia medica in the Government Analytical Laboratory and began an extra-mural course for medical students, which hastened the establishment of the University of Melbourne Medical School. After completing his studies in his home country of England, Eades went to Paris to study botany and chemistry and then migrated to Australia in 1848. Eades was a Foundation Member of both the Philosophical Society of Victoria and the Philosophical Institute of Victoria. He also served on the Exploration Committee which organised the Victorian Exploring Expedition from 1858 to 1862.
