As Chief he instigated an extensive program of geological mapping and coal resource evaluation , and oversaw an increase in bauxite mining, alumina refining, and research into oil and gas production. He was a close friend and collaborator of Professor Dorothy Hill of the University of Queensland, with whom he co-edited Geology of Queensland in 1960. Denmead was a member of both the Royal Society of Queensland and the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. In 1991 the Queensland Division of the Geological Society of Australia established the annual A. K.
