James Dell joined the Royal Navy in 1895 and as Able Seaman was in the crew of <span style="font-style:italic">Discovery</span> on the British National Antarctic Expedition. His sail-making skills proved useful in constructing canvas ration bags and sleeping bags, and he was a participant in two sledging parties. After the Expedition he was invalided from the Royal Navy, but rejoined and served in the Dardanelles and the North Sea during WWI. Dell's second Antarctic voyage was as boatswain and electrician on the Shackleton-Rowlett Expedition on 1921 - 1922 in <span style="font-style:italic">Quest</span>. His later career included as electrician on a country estate and in the coastguard during WWII.
