He was surgeon on convict transports to New South Wales 1819-1828 and published a series of letters outlining the state of society in New South Wales.

Born at Dalswinton near Dumfries, Scotland. Educated University of Edinburgh (medicine). Entered the Navy as assistant surgeon, becoming later surgeon, and then surgeon-superintendent in convict transports when he made five trips to New South Wales between 1819 and 1828. Was granted land in the Upper Hunter River in 1826. Returned to England in 1830.
