He was educated at Seaforth Vicarage, then apprenticed to Ewart and Myers from 1828 to 1835. Crooke sailed to Sydney via Canton, arriving February 1837. There he pastured sheep, acquired rights to various runs, began to raise cattle and later horses and opened up large areas of Gippsland.
