Basil Briggs was a senior lecturer and later reader in physics at the University of Adelaide from 1962 until his retirement. He had previously worked in the Radio Research Group, Cavendish Laboratory 1946-1961. Briggs had a distinguished career in radio science and was a world leader in the development of radio techniques for studying the behaviour of the ionosphere. The Buckland Park Array, constructed by Briggs for the University of Adelaide to study the ionosphere, was the world's largest low-frequency radio telescope. For over 25 years Briggs was a member of the editorial panel for <span style="font-style:italic">Journal of atmospheric and terrestrial physics</span>.
