It was after his third voyage to Sydney, on John Barry in 1819, that he stayed. Appointed Principal Surgeon at the Sydney Hospital, he made significant improvements to its operations. Between 1828 and 1836 he was Inspector of Colonial Hospitals. After he married Mary, daughter of John and Elizabeth Macarthur in 1823, his attention was directed increasingly, and not entirely successfully, towards agricultural pursuits. In 1823 Bowman was appointed Member of the first New South Wales Legislative Council.
