David Allen undertook infrared astronomy at the Anglo-Australian Telescope. He was largely responsible for the design and development of an infra-red instrument, "IRIS". He was the first and only permanent member of the observatory's scientific staff from 1983. The David Allen Prize is awarded every three years for exceptional achievement in astronomy communication.

He is credited with discovering the 'Hand of God' - the pulsar wind nebula PSR B1509-58.
