He was a keen naturalist and an active member of the local science societies in the localities he served as a minister. In 1889, he was elected as a Fellow of the Linnean Society, London, sponsored by F. Mueller for his 'exceptional knowledge of certain branches of science'. Other sponsors were Dr Paul Howard MacGillivray of Bendigo, and John Bracebridge Wilson of Geelong.
