<abstract>Hugh Muir BMetE ScD CPEng FIM FIEAust MAusIMM, was Professor of Physical Metallurgy, University of New South Wales from 1960 to 1983. Earlier he had worked at the Munitions Supply Laboratories, Victoria 1943-1945 and had lectured at the University of Otago 1947-1954 and the University of Melbourne 1955-1959.

Hugh was national President of the Australian Institute of Metals, and President of its New South Wales Branch; made notable contributions to the Standards Association of Australia and the Australian Welding Research Association; and was prominent in the Commission into Melbourne's King Street Bridge failure.

The Hugh Muir Prize is awarded annually by the Head of the School of Materials Science and Engineering, University of New South Wales, to the student, who has contributed most to the corporate life of the school.</abstract>
