During this period his research included the use of extensive infiltration anaesthesia in wound management. He returned to Sydney in 1949, establishing a private practice specialising in thyroid conditions. In 1959 Rundle was appointed foundation Professor of Surgery at the University of New South Wales. For 14 years he was also Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. Relations with colleagues were sometimes fraught, a dispute over pass standards prompting the resignation of Paul Korner and Ian Darian-Smith, Professors of Physiology. In 1973 Rundle became Director of the University's WHO Regional Teacher Training Centre, which focussed on postgraduate training of medical and paramedical personnel from the Pacific and South-East Asia.
