<abstract>Henry Newland was a prominent surgeon in Adelaide, where he held honorary positions in the Adelaide and Adelaide Children's Hospitals for many years. He was noted as a pioneer in neurosurgery, being the first Adelaide surgeon to practice in tis area. During WWI he was Lt Colonel commanding the Australian section of the Queen Mary Hospital where pioneer work in plastic surgery was carried out. Between 1912 and 1938 he lectured in surgery at the University of Adelaide. Newland's wider involvement in the medical community included terms as President of the South Australian Branch of the British Medical Association (BMA) and of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He was also active in the Royal Flying Doctor Service, as a founder of the South Australian Tuberculosis Association, Chairman of the Australian Medical Publishing Company, and an advocate for voluntary health insurance. The Henry Newland Prize, which recognises distinguished service to surgery in South Australia, was first awarded in 1956 by the Federal Council of the BMA in Australia (and later by the Australian Medical Association.</abstract>
