John McNally was a zoologist who was a noted authority on the koala. After serving as Deputy Director of the Victorian Department of Fisheries and Wildlife he was appointed Director of the National Museum of Victoria in 1962. His main concerns in the role were to improve the curation of the collections, to secure an increased budget from the State government, and to find a solution to the Museum's inadequate accommodation. McNally retired in 1978.
